Driving from Brisbane to Perth is one of those journeys that never gets old for me. No matter how many times I’ve done it, every trip brings something new—a change in the light, the colours of the land, the clouds in the sky, or the people I meet along the way. It’s a massive drive, make no mistake—around 4,300 kilometres give or take, depending on the exact route—but it’s also one of the most rewarding things I get to do in my work and life. There’s something deeply satisfying about setting off from the east coast and ending up on the other side of the continent, seeing the entire spine of Australia roll by out the window.
I usually allow five to six days for the drive, depending on the weather, workload, and any other factors that may arise. I average about 700–900 kilometres per day. That might sound full-on to some people, but when you’re used to it, it becomes second nature. I like to get up early, hit the road before sunrise, and put in a good stint before lunch. That way, I can usually wind down before dark, park up, have a feed and a cold one, and get a solid rest before doing it all again the next day.
The route I take depends slightly on the job and weather conditions, but my go-to is Brisbane > Toowoomba > Roma > Charleville > Cunnamulla > Bourke > Broken Hill > Port Augusta > Norseman > Perth. Some blokes prefer going up through Mount Isa and across the Barkly, but the southern run through Broken Hill is a good mix of sealed roads, decent fuel stops, and better options if I need parts or repairs.
I have a few favourite spots that I stop at every time. First night out of Brisbane, I’ll often pull up in Charleville. There’s a quiet little pub with good meals and friendly locals—it’s one of those joints where the bartender remembers your name even if you haven’t been in for six months. After Charleville, it’s usually Bourke or Cobar for the next night. The pubs out there are worth the stop alone—proper country hospitality, big serves, and stories at the bar you’d never hear in the city.
By the third or fourth night, I’m usually pulling into Port Augusta. From there, the Nullarbor awaits. That stretch across the Eyre Highway is probably my favourite part of the whole trip. The open space is almost spiritual—nothing but flat horizon, blue skies, and the sound of your tyres humming along. It’s quiet, vast, and wild. I’ll usually spend a night around the Nullarbor Roadhouse or Caiguna, depending on timing.
Sunrises and sunsets out there are something else. The colours are unreal—deep purples, burnt oranges, and soft pinks that seem to go on forever. There’s no light pollution out in the desert, so when the sun drops and the stars come out, you feel like you’re in another world. I always try to stop for sunset, even just for five minutes. It’s a good way to centre yourself and remember why these drives are so special.
Scenery-wise, the journey is a constantly changing canvas. From the lush hinterland outside Brisbane, to the red dirt of western Queensland, the dusty gold plains around Bourke, and the limestone cliffs near the Great Australian Bight—it’s Australia in all its raw beauty. Even after a dozen times, I still find myself pulling over to snap a photo or just standing there in silence, soaking it all in. It’s wild, harsh, and stunning all at once.
Driving solo or with a caravan in tow means I’ve got to be self-sufficient. There’s no RACQ ten minutes away, so being prepared is critical. Before every trip, I double-check everything—tyres, brakes, oil, coolant, towing setup, lights, spares. I carry extra fuel, spare parts, tools, coolant, belts, hoses—you name it. I’ve had minor things go wrong before, like a busted fan belt or a tyre going flat in the middle of nowhere, but because I’ve got what I need, I can fix it and keep moving. That preparation is what makes or breaks these trips. Delays out there aren’t just frustrating—they’re dangerous.
There’s also a mental side to it. Driving that far can be tiring, but I find a rhythm in it. I’ve got my playlists, my podcasts, and the occasional call with a mate on the hands-free to keep me company. I also make sure I take breaks every couple of hours, do a quick walk around the vehicle, stretch my legs, and take in the view. Fuel stops become little landmarks—places I remember not just for the fuel but for the meat pies, the characters behind the counter, or the cold drinks on a hot day.
By the time I roll into Perth, I always feel a mix of accomplishment and calm. It’s a long haul, no doubt, but it’s worth every kilometre. Whether I’m towing a caravan for a customer or just doing a solo run, it’s a journey that feels honest and real. It connects me with the land, reminding me of the vastness of Australia, and gives me time to think, reflect, and breathe.
In the end, that’s why I love driving from Brisbane to Perth. It’s not just a trip—it’s an experience. It’s the people, the places, the challenges, and the little moments of peace along the way. It’s freedom on four wheels, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
