Caravan Towing Perth to Brisbane

Towing a caravan from Perth to Brisbane is a true cross-country adventure, spanning over 4,300 kilometres 😲 and taking me through some of Australia’s most remote and rugged landscapes. It’s a journey I’ve done many times, and every trip reinforces just how important careful planning, patience, and experience are in making it a smooth and safe ride.

Preparation is key for such a long haul. Before setting off, I meticulously check everything—the caravan’s tyres, bearings, brakes, and lights- making sure all connections are secure. A breakdown in the middle of the Nullarbor isn’t something I ever want to deal with. I also stock up on fuel, water, and emergency supplies. Unlike other routes, this one has long stretches without services, so I always err on caution.

Leaving Perth, I take the Great Eastern Highway towards Kalgoorlie. This first leg is relatively easy, but I remain alert for road trains and wildlife, particularly at dawn and dusk. The UHF radio is essential, keeping me connected with truck drivers who can warn me about road conditions or hazards up ahead.

Kalgoorlie is my first major stop. It’s a good place to stretch my legs, grab a meal, and quickly inspect the caravan. From here, I continue east onto the Eyre Highway and into the vast, open expanse of the Nullarbor Plain. This is where the real endurance test begins. Long, straight stretches of road can lull drivers into a false sense of security, so I stop every few hundred kilometres, even if it’s just to take a short break and refresh.

One of my favourite rest points is at the famous Nullarbor Roadhouse. There’s something special about standing on the edge of the Great Australian Bight, looking out over the cliffs that drop dramatically into the Southern Ocean. But I never let the scenery distract me for too long—there’s still a long way to go.

Crossing into South Australia, I pass through Ceduna, where I take another break, refuel, and check over the rig. The further I go, the more the landscape starts to change, shifting from the arid plains of the Nullarbor to the rolling farmland of the Eyre Peninsula. Port Augusta is my next major stop, and I often stay overnight here to ensure I’m well-rested before tackling the next leg of the journey.

From Port Augusta, I take the highway through the Flinders Ranges towards Broken Hill. This section requires extra caution, as wildlife, especially kangaroos, can be unpredictable. I always prefer to drive during daylight hours, as the risk of animal strikes increases dramatically at night.

Broken Hill is another key stop where I refuel and inspect the caravan once again. I’ve learned from experience that catching minor issues early—like a loose bolt or a tyre showing signs of wear—can save me from major problems later on.

Continuing east, I cross into New South Wales and follow the Barrier Highway to Dubbo. Here, the roads become busier, and I shift my focus to dealing with increased traffic and variable road conditions. From Dubbo, I make my way through to Goondiwindi, crossing into Queensland, and from there, it’s a relatively straightforward run towards Brisbane.

As I approach the city, I always feel a sense of accomplishment. Towing a caravan across the country is no small task, but with careful planning, a steady hand, and respect for the road, it’s a challenge I embrace. Every trip reminds me why I love what I do—the freedom, the adventure, and the satisfaction of delivering someone’s caravan safely after an epic cross-country journey.
